Formula: AOV = Total Revenue ÷ Number of Orders
Example: $150,000 revenue from 3,000 orders → AOV = $50
Why AOV Matters
AOV is one of three levers that drive revenue growth:
Revenue = Traffic × Conversion Rate × AOV
Increasing any one of these three grows revenue. AOV is often the easiest and cheapest to improve because you are extracting more value from customers you have already acquired — no additional ad spend required.
An AOV increase from $50 to $55 (10%) on 3,000 monthly orders adds $15,000 in monthly revenue at zero incremental customer acquisition cost.
AOV vs. CLV
AOV measures a single transaction; CLV measures the cumulative value of a customer across all transactions over time.
CLV = AOV × Purchase Frequency × Customer Lifespan
Raising AOV without increasing purchase frequency or lifespan is still valuable, but both levers together compound.
Strategies to Increase AOV
Bundling: Package complementary products together at a slight discount. Bundles raise AOV while protecting margin better than blanket discounts.
Volume tiers: "Buy 2, save 10%" — incentivizes larger basket sizes without reducing per-unit price for small buyers.
Cross-sell at checkout: Amazon's "Frequently Bought Together" section is engineered for AOV. Replicate this on DTC stores with post-add-to-cart recommendations.
Free shipping threshold: Set free shipping at 110–120% of your current AOV. Shoppers add items to qualify, raising AOV.
Subscribe & Save / subscriptions: Recurring orders often have higher AOV because shoppers batch consumables rather than buying the smallest unit.
Upsell to larger sizes: Guide shoppers toward the value pack or bundle as the default, with the single unit positioned as the trial option.
AOV by Category
Apparel and home goods typically have AOVs of $50–$100. Electronics and furniture AOVs often exceed $200. Health and beauty averages $30–$60. Knowing your category AOV helps benchmark whether your cross-sell and bundling strategies are performing.
