Long-Tail Keyword
A longer, more specific search phrase with lower volume but usually higher purchase intent than a broad keyword.
In practice
Because it's so specific, a long-tail phrase usually has less competition and a shopper searching it already knows roughly what they want - which tends to convert better than a broad term that could mean many different things to different searchers.
"Shoes" is a broad keyword with huge volume and vague intent; "waterproof hiking boots size 10 wide" is long-tail, lower volume, but from someone close to buying.
Why it matters
Individually low-volume, long-tail keywords collectively often drive more total traffic and conversions than a handful of broad head terms, especially for a large catalog.
Worth knowing
- Lower competition than broad keywords, making them easier to rank for with less investment.
- Product-specific attributes (size, color, use case) are a natural source of long-tail variations.
- Particularly valuable for product pages, where searcher intent is already close to purchase.
