Aged Inventory Surcharge
An extra storage charge Amazon applies to FBA units that stay in its fulfillment centers unsold beyond a set number of days.
In practice
It is charged on top of monthly storage fees to push sellers to clear slow stock rather than let it sit. Amazon sets the age at which a unit starts to be charged and has changed that age more than once, so the current cutoff should be checked in Seller Central rather than assumed. Sellers usually respond with a price cut, a removal order or a bundle.
A seller finds 600 units of a discontinued colour sitting past the charge age and runs a clearance deal to move them before the next bill.
Why it matters
Slow stock costs more every month it stays, so an unsold unit can end up costing more to store than its margin was worth.
Worth knowing
- It is charged per unit, so it grows quickly on large, slow-moving pallets of low-priced items.
- The Manage Inventory and storage reports show which units are approaching the charge.
- A removal or liquidation order is often cheaper than paying the surcharge for several months.
