Fee Category
Amazon's internal product classification used to set a listing's referral fee, which can differ from the browse category shoppers see. Amazon assigns each ASIN a fee category and applies that category's referral fee rate. Depending on the product, the category can also affect closing fees, FBA fulfillment fees and FBA returns processing fees.
In practice
Amazon assigns each ASIN a fee category and applies that category's referral fee rate. Depending on the product, the category can also affect closing fees, FBA fulfillment fees and FBA returns processing fees. Sellers can see an ASIN's category in the Fee Preview report and dispute one that looks wrong through Selling Partner Support.
A seller finds that a kitchen product sits in a category with a 15% referral fee when a similar item pays 8%, and opens a dispute with the product details.
Why it matters
Two similar products can pay different fees. If an ASIN is moved to another fee category, its cost per unit changes even though the listing looks the same.
Worth knowing
- The fee category is not always the browse category shown to shoppers.
- The Fee Preview report shows each ASIN's current fee category.
- A category that looks wrong can be disputed with the product details and Amazon's fee guidance.
