Why CRO Outperforms Traffic Acquisition
Doubling your conversion rate has the same effect as doubling your traffic โ but without the media spend. Most ecommerce growth plans focus on acquiring more visitors. CRO focuses on extracting more value from the visitors you already have.
A store converting at 1.4% that spends ยฃ10,000/month on ads generates roughly 1.4 sales per 100 visitors. Fix the conversion rate to 2.8% and those same 100 visitors generate 2.8 sales โ same budget, double the revenue.

Note: CVR varies significantly by category. Consumables and replenishment products (supplements, pet food) convert at 4โ6%. High-AOV categories (furniture, jewellery) typically convert at 0.5โ1.5%.
15 High-Impact CRO Changes
1. Fix your above-the-fold on product pages
The first screen a buyer sees without scrolling must answer: what is this, why should I trust it, and how do I buy it? If your Add to Cart button requires scrolling on mobile, you have a structural problem.
Checklist for above-the-fold:
- Product name and primary image visible
- Price clearly shown (no interaction required to see it)
- Add to Cart button visible on mobile without scrolling
- At least one trust signal (star rating, review count, or badge)
2. Show star ratings on product pages and collection pages
Products with visible reviews convert 4ร better than products without. If you have reviews, surface them at the top of your product pages โ not buried at the bottom.
3. Add a sticky Add to Cart bar on mobile
On mobile, as the buyer scrolls down reading your description, the Add to Cart button disappears. A sticky bottom bar that persists as they scroll removes friction at the point of decision.
4. Compress your product images
Slow-loading images are a silent CVR killer. A 1-second delay in page load reduces conversion by 7% (Akamai). Compress all product images to under 200KB. Use Shopify's native WebP conversion (enabled by default in themes using image_tag).
5. Write benefit-led product descriptions
Most product descriptions describe features. Buyers buy outcomes. Rewrite your top 10 product descriptions in this structure:
- Lead with the primary outcome ("Sleep through the night without waking up stiff")
- Support with 2โ3 features that deliver the outcome
- Close with a usage or compatibility detail
6. Add urgency signals that are truthful
False scarcity ("Only 2 left!" when you have 500) backfires and erodes trust. Use real urgency:
- Inventory count: show the actual number when stock drops below 10
- Cut-off time: "Order before 3pm for same-day dispatch"
- Sale end date: only when there is an actual sale end date
7. Simplify your checkout
Each additional step in checkout increases abandonment. Shopify's one-page checkout (enabled by default in Shopify 2024+) reduces friction significantly. If you're on an older theme:
- Remove unnecessary fields (no "Company" field for DTC)
- Offer Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay โ express checkout reduces checkout time from 3 min to 30 sec for returning customers
8. Reduce your navigation options
The paradox of choice applies to navigation. A mega-menu with 50 links creates decision paralysis. For most DTC brands, a top navigation with 5โ7 items performs better than one with 15+.
9. Add social proof beyond star ratings
Star ratings are table stakes. Differentiate with:
- Photo reviews (dramatically more persuasive than text)
- "Verified buyer" badges
- UGC from Instagram embedded on product pages
- Number of units sold ("Over 10,000 sold")
10. Clarify your returns policy at the point of purchase
Buyer hesitation often comes down to: "What if it doesn't work?" Displaying your returns policy inline on product pages (not just in the footer) removes a key objection before it forms.
11. Fix your site search
30% of ecommerce visitors use site search โ and they convert at 2โ4ร the rate of browsers. If your Shopify search returns irrelevant results or zero results pages, you're converting your highest-intent visitors at the worst rate.

Collection pages are often neglected in favour of product pages. Improvements with measurable impact:
- Show product image variants on hover (reduces clicks to product page for wrong variants)

- Enable filtering and sorting (buyers who use filters convert at higher rates)
13. Speed up your mobile experience
Google's Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal, but they're also a CVR signal. Check your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) score in Google Search Console. Target: under 2.5 seconds.
Common Shopify speed culprits:
- Too many third-party apps loading JavaScript on every page
- Large uncompressed hero images
- Render-blocking fonts and scripts
14. A/B test your pricing presentation
Price anchoring โ showing a "before" price crossed out โ increases perceived value. Test:
